PROJECT NAIL-IT
(NAIL INNOVATIVE TEACHING)
Houston houses a large number of manicurists, a significant proportion of who are of Asian descent and of reproductive age. Many Vietnamese immigrants account for this workforce as the nail salon industry has provided an economic niche for these populations, who may otherwise face difficulty finding a job due to limited English proficiency.
Every day at nail salons across the city, these nail technicians are exposed to harmful chemicals and biological and ergonomic hazards which are linked to serious health and safety issues. In 2017, HOPE clinic took the initiative to target the nail salon workers with a needs assessment, along with education and outreach activities, providing them with opportunities for health screening as well as educating them about the importance of preventative care.
The Nail-IT (IT) model has been gradually implemented. In 2017, the clinic outreach staff reached 361 nail salons and over 500 women through interviews, focus groups, and educational events.

HOPE Clinic is a Health Center Program grantee under 42 U.S.C. 254b, and a deemed Public Health Service employee under 42 U.S.C. 233(g)-(n).
